“It went well, then?” Maisey asked, grinning.
After the count of three blinks, I tore the door open and… he was already gone. “Bastard!”
The two girls who’d been getting ice stopped in the middle of the hall, looking at me like I was an eel popping out to attack them on their way by.
I went back into the room and tried to slam the door, but it was on those nice pneumatic thingamabobs. It closed gently, making me feel that much more ineffectual.
So, I turned and kicked my shoe across the room. It narrowly missed the window, and even more narrowly missed my plant. Slipping off the other shoe in the usual way, I hurried over to check Boo’s Sunrise over. That’d been way too close. Damn Deke and his infuriating… everything!
Maisey was eyeballing me like she had two cents burning a hole in her pocket, so I dashed into the bathroom. Looking into the mirror, I saw my lips were red, my hair was mussed, and my eyes were wild. Oh, and one nipple had popped out—hopefully after the ice girls.
I yanked the dress back into place, and it slipped immediately off again. Making animalistic noises, I fought my way out of it. There wasn’t anything else to wear but a towel, so I wrapped up in one and propped myself against the counter, head hanging.
I felt… sad. I’d been enjoying Deke’s company, and enjoying his kisses. I’d been eager to get back to his room, where I’d’ve given him a firm push onto his bed. Though, considering the forcefulness of his demeanor just now, maybe he’d be the one doing the pushing. Hell, that scenario would’ve been fine, too.
The scenario I absolutely hadn’t foreseen was him taking me back to my room and yanking the door closed practically before his tongue was out of my mouth. Asshole.
My gaze caught on my clutch, which lay discarded on the counter. After a little struggle with the latch, I dug out my phone and dialed.
There was one man I knew that wasn’t an asshole, and it sure would be nice to hear a friendly voice right now. I’d sorta spaced him ever since Deke’d thrown down that gauntlet this morning. Was Con here, at the hotel? Hell, it was a possibility he’d seen Deke and me necking on our way up to the room. Maybe he knew I was a horrible, promiscuous tramp and he’d decided never to talk to me again.
But, wait. He doesn’t know what I look like.
Maybe his plane had gone down. He’d never not answered before. He could be dead.
Maisey knocked. “Are you working yourself into a tizzy in there?”
I swiped away my fledgling tears. “No,” I said, voice wobbly.
“Come out here. I ordered cake.”
I tossed my phone on the bathroom counter. I didn’t even wanna look at it. One step from the door, I paused. “What kind of cake?”
“Well, they had carrot, chocolate, cinnamon, and white on the menu, so…”
I leaned my head against the door, hoping she’d made the right choice, but even then not sure what the right one was.
